O'Byrne Cup 2012

Meath play Wexford in the first round of the O'Byrne Cup 2012 by the look of things. If they win that they go on to play Louth or Kilkenny. I fancy Louth !. I won't go beyond this as it gets very hypothetical.
Any predictions

Kilmainham/Drumbaragh win U21A Football Final

Kilmainham/Drumbaragh  win U21A Football FinalKilmainham/Drumbaragh  1-10 Walterstown 1-09
Great win for Kilmainham/Drumbaragh  today Sun 27Nov11 in the Meath U21A Football Championship. It was a very competitive game throughout and some fine saves by Kilmainham/Drumbaragh goalkeeper helped stem the comeback by Walterstown in the last quarter.
This fine display helped the take the trophy and take some scalps along the way by defeating teams like Dunshaughlin along the way. Kilmainham/Drumbaragh  are an amalgamated team this year an have helped to raise the standard of Under 21  football enormously this year. They will get promoted to U21 top division for next year and should make an impact there too.

Corofin v St. Kevins Was it a SQUARE Ball

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4st4Jxl4Nzk&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

Corofin Square Ball !

This is a link to utube video of Corofin v St Brigids.
Judge for yourself if it was a square ball.
How many replays and or camera angles do you require to givea definitive answer.
Or was there a FOUL on the Defender anyway.
I know what I see myself.
But I am not the referee.
Very much like Meath's Graham Geraghty GOAL this year against Kildare

Square Ball

Square Ball

Last weekend the public witnessed another ‘Square Ball’ controversy between Corofin and St. Brigid’s in the Connaucht SFC final. Corofin had a goal disallowed in the 1st half because the ref deemed it to be a square ball. St. Brigids went on to win the match by 0-11 to 0-10 points and the Corofin team will look at that moment as a turning point in the game. After the final several supporters showed their displeasure at the referee by invading the football pitch and attacking the referee. Stewards and officials did their best to escort the referee as safely as possible but it was easier said than done.
The question is will the ‘square ball’ rule be finally revised and more importantly will the culprits who attacked the referee on Sunday be punished?
In relation to Sunday’s ‘square ball’ incident, Graham Geraghty of the Meath senior team had a goal disallowed against Kildare in his comeback game in the Leinster SFC during the summer. After several reviews by pundits from the media, it is still not clear whether it was a ‘square ball’ or not. Geraghty himself and the Meath supporters claimed it wasn’t a square ball’. It has been a hot topic over the summer in the GAA about sorting out the square ball rule as several goals during the championship throughout the country were disallowed.
So what is the solution, get rid of the square ball altogether and leave the goalkeepers exposed to being bombarded by huge men in the square or is there another way to sort out the controversial rule?

Football in Meath - Where to now

Football in Meath - Where to now
Considering the exit of Summerhill so easily from the All Ireland Club Championship the question has to be raised about the standard of club football in Meath. Or another way to look on it is the rise in standard of club football in Dublin. Or else a combination of both.
Where is club and county football going in Meath.
The Meath county champions don't have a player on the county team.
St Mary's Coolkenno/ Shillelagh won the wicklow Championship after joining just this year.
Donegal get to All Ireland Semi Final playing "DEFENSIVE" football.
Meath won the Leinster Championship with the good fortune of of a dubious "GOAL".
Meath were "KNOCKED" out of the Leinster Championship this year by Kildare "TWICE"
Make your suggestions and FOLLOW the site to see how it progresses.

Wicklow Senior Football Championship Sun 14 Nov 2011

St Mary's Coolkenno/ Shillelagh        2-5
Rathnew                                              0-10

I see that Rathnew played St Mary's in the Wicklow County Final this weekend 13 Nov 2011.
St Mary's Coolkenno/ Shillelagh won out in the end by a sigle point. The Wickloe final had been delayed to alllow Leighton Glynn to play for Ireland under in Australia in the International Rules series that Ireland won. St Mary's Coolkenno/ Shillelagh formed year for  their first campaign. Interestingly their manager was Karl O'Dwyer son of Mick O'Dwyer the outgoing Wicklow Manager. Also Rathnew was managed by Harry murphy for the last time as he is  the incoming Wicklow manager.
Other counties including Meath could amalgamate some of their teams to inprove standards. Look what St Mary's Coolkenno/ Shillelagh achieved.
St Mary's Coolkenno/ Shillelagh play Portlaoise (Laois) the next weekend 20 Nov 2011 in the All Ireland Club Championship.

Gaeil Colmcille
0-7

Navan O'Mahonys proved too strong for Gaeil Colmcille in the Coolrite Refrigeration Under 21 FC final at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening. 12 Nov 2011

Navan O’Mahonys pulled away from the start after beating the favourites Donaghmore/Ashbourne in the semi-final after extra time.
By the end nine different players were on the scoresheet for the latest holders of the Joey McKeown Cup, with the impressive Alan Forde scoring 4 point from play.
O'Mahonys had 1-3 on the board before Seanie Curran got Gaeil Colmcille off the mark in the 12th minute. Cathal Symth and Jake Regan were performing well as they scored 0-4 and 0-3 respectively, while Darragh Smyth recorded 1-2. The Navan-side went on to lead by 1-8 to 0-3 at the break.
Gaeil Colmcille’s keeper John Skelly kept  the scoreboard looking a bit more respectable with many fine saves. While Danny McGovern was scoring for Gaeil Colmcille up the other end and sent over Gaeil Colmcille’s final three points of the game.
For O'Mahaonys, the presence of Conor Finnegan at full-back and goalkeeper Jack Walsh ensured Gaeil Colmcille made little headway in the scoring department.

O'Mahonys - J. Walsh; K. Reddy, C. Finnegan, C. Lynn; J. O'Reilly (0-1), C. Walsh, D. Louth; P. McGrath (0-1), D. Maguire; D. Smyth (1-3), A. Forde (0-4), M. Kelly (0-1); S. Gillespie (1-1), J. Meath U21 Football Championship Semi Finals
Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-10
Navan O'Mahonys overcame Donaghmore/Ashbourne by a single point in a thrilling Under 21 FC semi-final at Skryne which needed extra-time. Both teams knew going into the match that the winner would be red rot favourite to lift the Joey McKeown Cup.
Goals from Forde and Cathal Smyth helped o Mahonys to a two point advantage at half time with a score of 2-5 to 2-3.
Navan O’Mahonys Shane Gillespie’s goal after the restart helped them to a five point lead, but Donaghmore/Ashbourne fought back and took the lead in the 47th minute and a fine save from O'Mahonys' keeper Jack Walsh forced extra time.
However Jake Regan’s two points in extra time helped the hoops to shade it and now face Gaeil Colmcille in the final.

GaeilColmcille 2-13
Skryne 1-07

Gaeil Colmcille defeated Skryne in windy conditions in Corton to book a place in the final against Navan O’Mahonys.
Fioon Ferguson opened Gaeil Colmcille’s account with a point only for Skyrne to respond with a goal two minutes later. With points from McGovern, Mattimoe and Farrelly aswell as strong from the Gaeil Colmcille defence gave them a lead at half time of 0-8 to 1-2.

Gaeil Colmcille stretched their lead in the second half with frees from Mattimoe and Ferguson before Danny McGovern palmed the ball into the Skyrne net. Great play from Oisin Reilly lead to Gary McGovern’s goal which sealed the tie for Gaeil Colmcille.

All Ireland / Leinster Club SFC St. Brigid’s 2-15 Summerhill 0-11

All Ireland / Leinster Club SFC
St. Brigid’s 2-15         Summerhill 0-11
The 2011 Dublin champions prevailed in the one sided encounter with Summerhill in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship competition. After winning the Dublin SFC against local rivals St. Oliver Plunkett’s, St. Brigid’s would have been the bookie’s favourite to beat the Meath champions and they lived up to their reputation to convincingly dispose of Summerhill with a 10 point margin in the end.

Summerhill did well in the early minutes of the 1st half to keep up with St. Brigid’s with Sean Dalton leading the forward line who was very lively throughout the match but once St.Brigids went into the lead 0-4 to 0-3 they never looked back with 2 goals in the 1st half and a half time score of 2-7 to 0-4 points. The contest was effectively over.

Adrian Kenny returned to the pitch during the 2nd half after coming off early in the 1st half to help out his teammates but could not prevent the outcome. Paddy Andrews tormented the Summerhill backline and scored 5 points, 4 of them from play. Philly Ryan was also a standout player scoring 5 points from play. Dublin All-Ireland winner Barry Cahill dominated at midfield and even chipped in with a goal.
St. Brigid’s will later meet Wexford’s Horeswood in the Leinster SFC quarter final

All Ireland Club Championship 2011 Summerhill v St Brigid's

All Ireland Club Championship 2011 goes into action this weekend in Leinster.
The Royal interest in this is twofold. Obviously Summerhill play St. Brigid's the Dublin Champions. Also the manager of St. Brigid's is none other than Meath own Gerrry McAntee who played for Meath back in the glory days of the eighties. St. Brigid's Barry Cahill is their most high profile player and has played consistently well for both club and county. St Brigid’s
Summerhill from Meath don’t have any county player. They won the Meath county final replay against Dunshaughlin on Sun Oct 16th on extra time after the first county final match on Sun 4th Oct ended in a draw. Summerhill who were favourites for both matches play St. Brigid’s on Sun 13 Nov. Interestingly Summerhill don’t have any regular county players on their team. A point that could be teased out on another day.

Meath U21A Football Championship

Meath Under 21 ‘A’ Football Championship
About 11 teams took part in the first round of Meath Under 21 ‘A’ Championship to yield 8 teams for the quarter finals
Quarter Finals
St. Patrick’s   1-9       Vs        Duleek/Bellewstown  2-13
St. Patricks came into this game with momentum gained from their thrilling win over a very much fancied Ratoath team. However Duleek/Bellewstown have done well in the recent years in this competition and spoiled St. Patrick’s party by going out comfortable winners in the end.
Trim   0-6       Vs        0-10     Walterstown
A young Trim team, many of whom will be still underage for next year’s competition, just came up short against last year’s finalists, Walterstown, which contained a lot of players from last year’s final used their experience to graft out a win to the next round.
Oldcastle         1-10     Vs        1-12     Kilmainham/Drumbaragh
This was the game to watch so far in this year’s competition as it was always going to be a close contest. Oldcastle had senior club players in Cian McPartland, Tommy Rahill, Conor McHugh, Robert Farrelly and not to forget county star Paddy Gilsenan but the amalgamated side of Kilmainham/Drumbaragh had their own star players in NUI Maynooth Sigerson player Mickey Newman, Drogheda United Darragh McNamara, Enda Nulty and Willie Carry all of whom were part of the successful 2008 Meath minor team under Pat Coyle. With 5 remaining in the 2nd half Oldcastle were up 1-10 to 1-7 but the amalgamated side fought back to score 5 points in 5 minutes to win the match.
Dunshaughlin            1-19     Vs        0-5       Na Fianna
It was expected that Dunshaughlin would win this tie but by how much was the question no-one knew the answer to before the match begun. Dunshaughlin started 6 players who played in the county final SFC replay; Alastar Doyle, Tommy Johnson, Eoin Hegarty, Fergus Toolin, Conor Deveraux, Tadhg O Dushlaine and Niall Murphy. Conditions were very wet when this game was played but Dunshaughlin to their credit still managed to achieve a high score line by the end of the game.
