Banty to decide on Meath future within few days

Banty to decide on Meath future within few days

Seamus McEnaney says he will decide on his future as Meath Senior Football manager in the next five days.
'Banty' didn't want to be rushed into a decision on whether or not he would stay on as the Royals boss, when speaking in the aftermath of this afternoon's three-point loss to Laois in their Round 4 All-Ireland SFC Qualifier at O'Connor Park.

"This evening is not the time for making decisions like that," McEnaney said.
"I will guarantee you that I am absolutely proud of the Meath players and proud of the young fellas that have come through and proud of my management team.

The name of the current Meath manager - who will make a decision on his future with the Royal County this week - is amongst six nominated for the Monaghan job.

Others nominated include ex- Clontibret manager Declan Brennan and former Monaghan players Declan Loughman, Michael O'Dowd, Kevin Carragher and Bernie Murray.

Banty was manager of the Farney County from 2005 to 2010 before being appointed the first 'outside' manager of Meath.

McEnaney may go for another term

Seamus McEnaney on the sideline for Meath at Tullamore on Saturday.

There is only one topic being discussed by most Meath GAA enthusiasts this week - the role of manager of the county football team - Seamus McEnaney has not ruled himself out of a third year at the helm.
The fact that the Royals were knocked out of the All-Ireland SFC at the quarter-final stage by Laois at O'Connor Park, Tullamore last Saturday has been relegated to a secondary matter.
McEnaney refused to comment directly when the question was posed last Saturday evening although he pledged to make a quick decision.

Laois v Meath SFC Qualifier Preview Sat 28 July

Preview: SFC Qualifier - Laois v Meath Tullamore Sun

Tullamore  O'Connor Park, Saturday 28 July, 3.30pm
Can Meath become only the second county in the 11-year history of the All-Ireland qualifiers to win a Round 4 tie a week after losing a provincial final?
That's the big question facing Seamus McEnaney's men as they prepare to make their third trip of the summer to Tullamore for a tricky last-12 clash with Laois, who have caused the Royals lots of problems over the years.

Since Dublin defeated Sligo in 2001 seven days after losing the Leinster final to Meath, 12 teams have tried and failed to overcome the dreaded six-day turnaround. Seamus McEnaney experienced it himself as Monaghan boss two years ago when they lost to Kildare, so he is fully aware of the task facing his team as they try to put behind them the disappointment of losing last Sunday Leinster final to Dublin as quickly as possible.

'Banty' was certainly in bullish mood after his team almost produced an unlikely comeback against a complacent Dublin side, and has promised more of the same battling qualities from the Royals this weekend. After the start to the season they had, reaching a provincial final was an unexpected bonus for the Royals, but they never like losing to their great rivals from the capital and it remains to be seen what impact -if any - that defeat will have had on them.
Laois have reached this juncture without playing particularly well. Following their relegation from Division 1 of the Allianz League, they were dumped out of the Leinster SFC by Longford, but have built up momentum since then with wins over Carlow, Monaghan and Leitrim. They almost came a cropper in Carrick-on-Shannon last weekend, and will need to show a massive improvement, especially their forwards who were guilty of kicking 17 wides against the Connacht minnows.

Video Technology comes to Croke Park

Video Technology comes to Croke Park in Meath v Dublin Leinster  SFC

Eoghan O'Gara, Dublin, kicks the ball past Meath goalkeeper David Gallagher, the umpire initially signalled that the shot had gone wide, but referee Marty Duffy over-ruled him after seeing the replay on the big screen

GAA president Liam O'Neill has no issue if match officials use the big screen in Croke Park to aid decision-making in future -- so long as the correct call is made.

The issue of score-detection technology raised its head in last weekend's Leinster SFC final clash between Meath and Dublin when a replay on Croke Park's big screens clearly showed Eoghan O'Gara's point attempt flash inside the posts after it had been waved wide by the umpires and referee Marty Duffy.

Croke Park are adamant that the stadium replay of the score had no influence on the decision to reverse the call. They insist instead that linesman Maurice Deegan saw the score in 'real time' and wasn't influenced by the big-screen replay.

And O'Neill believes the most important issue was that the right decision was made and hinted he is open to the use of similar replays in the future.

"Doing the right thing would never make me feel uncomfortable," said the Laois man. "You have to be brave enough to do the right thing and that is what we are here for. Everyone wants to see if someone gets a score that they are entitled to it. And if it's wide everyone wants to see it given wide.

"Maurice clearly had a better angle, he informed the referee and that informed the referee's decision. That was common sense in action, the right thing was done by the right people at the right time, and in time. We'd be very happy with it."

Leinster SFC: Meath beat Kildare Sun 1 July 2012
Meath 1-17
Kildare 1-11

Seanie Johnston failed to feature for Kildare as Meath became the first team to book a place in this years Leinster SFC Final, following a six-point semi-final win over the Lillywhites at Croke Park this afternoon.

Seamus 'Banty' McEnaney's charges dug deep to book a place in their second decider in three years.

Fresh from his 45-second appearance for the Coill Dubh Senior Hurlers yesterday, it was expected that Cavan native Johnston would feature for Kildare today.

However, Kieran McGeeney opted not to spring the former Breffni County attacker, despite the Royals very much in the ascendancy late on.
