Meath Star Paddy O'Rourke in the Spotlight

Meath SFC: Dunshaughlin and Skryne finish level

29 April 2012
Dunshaughlin ...... 0-9 Skryne ................. 1-6

Dunshaughlin and neighbours Skryne played out a draw in this hoganstand.com SFC Group B second round clash at Ratoath on Saturday evening.

Having looked the more deserving winners throughout Dunshaughlin needed a 59th minute Trevor Dowd point to tie the scores.

Dowd's leveller came moments after Skryne hit the front in bizarre fashion with the game's only goal.
When Paddy O'Rourke's wayward point attempt wasn't cleared by the otherwise efficient Dunshaughlin defence, Ian Davis fired home Skryne's first goal of the campaign from close range.

Five minutes of merited stoppage time couldn't separate the sides who were deadlocked on just one other occasion over the hour.
The outcome resulted in a point each for sides who managed just 0-8 each in the opening when Dunshaughlin lost heavily to Dunboyne and Skryne fell four points short of Simonstown.
Dunshaughlin were let down by wayward shooting in the opening half. When playing into the breeze blowing from the road goal, Gary Farrelly's men shot nine wides.
Skryne were fortunate to finish with their full compliment of players. Full-back James Looby escaped sanction for a tenth minute foul on Dowd, that seemed to warrrant a yellow card.

The main talking point centred on a late challenge by Skryne midfielder Paddy O'Rourke on Cathal O'Dwyer as he was pointing in the 42nd minute.

O'Dwyer left the action was the board reading 0-8 to 0-5 while O'Rourke picked up a yellow card from referee John O'Byrne and then placed Ciaran Lenehan for a point.
Skryne 'keeper Felim O'Rourke intervened smartly to prevent Dowd from goaling at the expense of a '45' that yielded nothing.
The impressive Conor Devereux pointed twice in the opening six minutes while Davis cancelled out his first score to level matters for the first time.
Dunshaughlin remained in front until Davis' goal. The opening 12 minutes produced six scores but there were only two more scores before the break at which time last year's SFC runners-up led by 0-5 to 0-3.

Skryne v Dunshaughlin

Skryne 1 -6 Dunshaughlin 0 – 9
With both teams needing the points this was always going to be a competitive fixture. Dunshaughlin were first of the mark after three minutes followed almost immediately by a point from Ian Davis. Dunshaughlin posted the next two but Mark Battersby on eleven minutes pulled one back for the Skryne men. Wayward shooting from Dunshaughlin, especially from set pieces, kept this match open as a contest but they did manage a further two to open up a three point margin before Ian Davis again scored to leave only two points between the teams at the break.
The second half saw Dunshaughlin open up a four point gap but David Ryan and Davis again pulled it back to a two point game. Further points were traded by both sides with Cairan Lenehan coming forward to get on the scoreboard with 47 minutes gone.

The referee issued O’Rourke with a yellow card for a foul on a Dunshaughlin forward. The same player however showed enormous patience throughout the game as he was continually fouled, of the ball, by his opponent which was not dealt with by the officials.

A further ten minutes were to elapse with both sides missing scoring chances before the only goal of the game was scored. Paddy O’Rourke kicked a long ball into the corner which wasn’t dealt with effectively by the Dunshauglin defense. The resultant cross saw the unmarked Ian Davis strike the ball to the back of the net to put Skryne ahead for the first time in the game with 58 minutes of normal time gone. However Dunshaughlin dug deep to get an equalizer with time up. There was a further five minutes of injury time played but neither side was able to get a winning score.
This result sees both sides on one point each making both their chances of reaching the knockout staged that bit more difficult.

Dunshaughlin v Skryne

Dunshaughlin 0-9 Skryne 1-6

Dunshaughlin and Skryne shared the spoils in this Senior Championship match played in Skryne. Despite having to equalise to gain the draw, Dunshaughlin will be frustrated with the result having conceded a scrappy goal late on and will also rue a series of bad wides.
With Caoimhin King dominating at midfield Dunshaughlin looked much the better team in the opening half despite playing against the breeze. Conor Devereux opened the scoring after three minutes. Skryne equalised a minute later but Anthony Johnson restored Dunshaughlin’s advantage with a fine point. Devereux was causing problems for the Skryne rearguard and he pointed again in the sixth minute. Skryne pulled one back after ten minutes but a Trevor Dowd free a minute later cancelled it out. However despite Black and Amber domincance for the remainder of the half another Devereux point after 17 minutes was all they had to show. A Skryne point after 26 minutes meant that there was only two points between the sides at half time.
Two frees in the opening six minutes of the second half stretched Dunshaughlin’s lead and with the breeze on their backs they were definite favourites at this stage. But an injury to Kenny McTigue seemed to unsettle them and two points from the Taramen reduced their deficit.

Cathal O’Dwyer then scored a super point but was hit late and had to retire injured. Dunshaughlin supporters were furious when the perpetrator was only shown a yellow card by the referee who took a lenient view of a number of robust challenges from the Skryne men throughout the game.

Skryne again reduced their arrears to two with 12 minutes remaining and with time almost up a long high attempted point somehow resulted in a Skryne goal. Dowd immediately equalised but despite five minutes of injury time neither team could muster a winner.
Best for Dunshaughlin were Denis Kealy, Caoimhin king, John Crimmins and Conor Devereux.

FL2 final: Kildare defeat Tyrone. Kildare 0-16 Tyrone 0-11

FL2 final: Kildare defeat Tyrone. Kildare 0-16 Tyrone  0-11
Kildare claimed the Division Two silverware with an impressive 0-16 to 0-11 defeat of Tyrone.
This is Tyrone's first defeat of the year, while Kildare can go into the championship with their tails up.
The curtain-raiser at Croke Park was in the melting pot for an hour but the winners reeled off seven points in succession to take a firm grip of the match, with substitute Padraig Fogarty and playmaker Mikey Conway particularly impressive.

Giles and ex-Tipp boss Evans boost Meath

Giles and ex-Tipp boss Evans boost Meath
TREVOR Giles is the latest to join the Meath back-room team as Seamus McEnaney seeks to re-energise the camp in the build-up to the championship.

Giles will come aboard as the forwards' coach while former Tipperary manager John Evanss will also bring his experience to the Meath camp as they prepare for their Leinsterr championship opener against Wicklow on May 27.

Evans quit Tipperary after their defeat by Sligo in Division 3 on March 18. He led Tipperary to successive league promotions in 2008 and 2009, and also managed them to a first Munster U-21 title in 2010.

It is understood that Evans has not yet met the Meath players but will do so this weekend.

McEnaney has persuaded forward ace Joe Sheridan to return from Boston to strengthen his side and it is understood that Peadar Byrne has also been recalled to the playing panel in the past week

Banty's numbers

Banty's numbers Sun 29Apr2012
The Meath County Board executive, in particular chairman Barney Allen, have come in for plenty of media criticism after asking Seamus McEnaney to resign as manager, but they made the right decision.

McEnaney's record as Meath boss has been dire. It began with last year's National Leaguee when the Royals won just one game out of seven and avoided relegation to the third flight only because that victory gave them a head-to-head advantage over Sligo. He followed up by alienating his selectors Liam Harnan and Barry Callaghan to the extent that they resigned before a championship campaign which ended in mid-July and was bookended by a pair of defeats to Kildare.

This year, things are even worse. Meath will be playing Division 3 football next year after winning just two games out of seven, their schedule ending with a ten-point drubbing by Tyrone followed by a nine-point home defeat to Louth which sealed their fate. In all, McEnaney has taken charge of 18 competitive games and won just five of them. It's an abysmal record.

Wicklow Robbed !

Wicklow Robbed !

Wicklow's joy at retaining their Allianz Hurling League Division 2A status turned to frustration and anger yesterday when they discovered that their dressing room had been raided.

A substantial amount of cash and valuables were reportedly stolen by a thief/thieves as Casey O'Brien's men battled for their Division 2A survival against Down in St. Loman's Park, Trim. Wicklow won by 2-14 to 0-17, but their players got a big shock when they returned to their dressing room to discover some of the belongings had been stolen.

Banty Survives Meath Board

Banty Survives Meath Board Wed 18 Apr 2012
Seamus McEnaney will remain on as boss of the Meath senior footballers following a meeting of the county board on Wednesday night.
A motion to remove him failed to get the required two thirds majority, with 'Banty' getting more than the necessary 25 votes to survive.
At the meeting, the county board received heavy criticism for the way they handled the management issue. McEnaney's stewardship of the senior side was also called into question, with some delegates not happy at the style of football being played.

Graham Geraghty has criticised Meath County Board for involving Sean Boylan in the managerial row.
Royal County managerial legend Boylan was name-dropped last week as the successor-in-waiting to under-pressure current boss Seamus McEnaney but the Dunboyne herbalist was inadvertently left with egg on his face when 'Banty' subsequently survived a vote of confidence from clubs on Wednesday night. Player / selector Geraghty has pointed the finger of blame for the embarrassment squarely at the Board:

Meath lose to Louth and relegated to Div 3

Meath lose to Louth and relegated to Div 3 Sun 8 Apr 2012 at Navan
Meath are down to Division Three after a humiliating 2-14 to 1-8 defeat to Louth at Navan.
This match was a straight shoot-out for survival and the Wee County won easily with Derek Maguire hitting both goals.
The losers finished the match with 13 men after midfielders Brian Meade and Mark Ward both got two yellows and the home supporters could be forgiven for asking for a refund after the final whistle.

With Division Three waiting, Meath football is stumbling to an all-time low.
But credit Louth. The Reds dominated the first half entirely to lead by 1-12 to 0-3 at the interval, two of Meath's three points coming within a minute just before the short whistle.

Mayo 0-20 Dublin 0-08: Mayo beat Dublin off the field Sat 31 Mar 2012 in Castlebar

Mayo 0-20 Dublin 0-08: Mayo beat Dublin off the field Sat 31 Mar 2012 in Castlebar
Dublin looked anything but All-Ireland champions in Castlebar tonight where Mayo schooled Pat Gilroy's side from start to finish to keep alive their hopes of a NFL Division One semi-final berth.
Mayo will need to beat Kerry in the Kingdom next week but if they play like they did tonight against a side whose place in the final four is guaranteed they will have every chance.
Dublin, in contrast, will be destroyed in Cork if Gilroy doesn't identify the cause of an anaemic performance that lacked structure, hunger and discipline.
They ended the game with 13 men, after Paul Flynn and Diarmuid Connolly were correctly dismissed in the second half for off-the-ball incidents. The departure of the latter came via a second yellow card, shortly after the forward's first point in the 48th minute. Indeed, such was the paucity of Dublin attacks, their first wide did not arrive until the 53rd minute.
In total, they accrued seven yellows and two reds as a beating turned into a hammering in the second half.

Crossmaglen 2-19 Garrycastle 1-07:

The Leinster champions let a five-point lead slip in the first game on St Patrick's Day and Cross were never likely to find themselves in that position again.
Indeed, it was as good as over by halftime, after Francis Hanratty netted goals on five and 18 minutes, and club legend Oisin McConville pointed four for a lead of 2-08 to 0-04 at the
break.
