Referee 'shoved to ground' after Tullamore's defeat to
Summerhill in Leinster Championship
The ugly scenes came after the Dublin official changed his
mind about awarding a penalty to Tullamore in the closing stages of the match.
The match referee was 'shoved to the ground' after Tullamore
were knocked out of the Leinster Club Football Championship by Summerhill at
O'Connor Park on Sunday afternoon.
Shortly after the final whistle, referee Barry Tiernan had
to be escorted off the pitch as he was surrounded by Tullamore players before a
person outside the matchday squad appeared to push the official to the ground.
The ugly scenes came after the Dublin official changed his
mind about awarding a penalty to Tullamore in the closing stages of the match.
With the Offaly side needing a goal as they trailed by two
points, 1-09 to 1-07, Tullamore knocked a long ball towards the Summerhill goal
that sparked a scramble for possession.
Tiernan first blew his whistle to indicate a free in for
Tullamore outside the six yard box, but after consulting with his umpires, he
pointed to the spot for a penalty.
But, as Tullamore's Paul McConway waited to take the
penalty, Tiernan then consulted with his linesman before signally for a free
instead of a penalty.
When John Furlong's free came to nothing for Tullamore, the
final whistle blew shortly afterwards to see the match finish 1-09 to 1-07 in
Summerhill's favour.
Many Tullamore players then proceeded to remonstrate with
the referee who was being escorted off the pitch by O'Connor Park officials it
appeared he was shoved to the ground by the individual.

Naas through to Leinster semi with comfortable win over
Summerhill.
The Kildare club's reward is a semi-final clash with St
Loman's of Mullingar on November 19th.
The Meath champions never got going and failed to find any
sparkle. They kicked nine wides in the opening half and added three more after
the interval, but they had to be thankful to their goalkeeper Sean Muddiman for
keeping them in the game as he made three outstanding interventions to prevent
Naas from adding to their goal tally.
